The Sociology Department has an undergraduate major as a national first-class discipline, can offer doctoral degrees in Social Development and Management and master degrees in Sociology and Social Work (MSW). The department has 34 full-time faculty members, 97% of whom hold PhD. degrees, and over 70% have more than one year overseas academic experience, which is reputed for academic influence not only in China but all over the world.

The major of Sociology aims to cultivate individuals with profound humanities literacy, solid theoretical foundation, proficient research skills, and innovative mindset. The graduates, who are dedicated patriots with a strong sense of social responsibility, find careers in government, educational, research, and cultural institutions, enterprises, and NGOs, performing tasks such as social research and data analysis, policy study and assessment, and social management and planning.

About science research, the Sociology Department focuses on Eastern European & Russian social theories, social science methodology, population and social health, and national security and military sociology. We emphasize both theoretical research and social practice, responsible for the famous national surveys CSS (China Social Situation Survey) and CGSS (China Comprehensive Social Survey) in the Heilongjiang province, providing students with extensive fieldwork experience.
